Quang Binh a province along Vietnam and north-central coast. The province is bordered by the Laotian Khammouane Province to the west, the North Pacific Ocean to the east, Ha Tinh Province to the north and Quang Tri Province to the south. With only 50 km wide from its border with Lao to the seashore, Quang Binh is the narrowest province on the map of Vietnam.
Quang Binh has become a central tourism, which is home to Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park- an interesting natural wonder which was recognized by UNESCO as world heritage in July, 2003. This number one cavern in Vietnam - 60km away from Dong Hoi City, has become an increasingly famous attraction in recent years.
The Park's landscape is formed by limestone plateaux and tropical forests. It features great geological diversity and offers spectacular phenomena, including a large number of caves and underground rivers. With an area of over 200,000 ha, it is the largest Karst region. Phong Nha - Ke Bang area has a group of over 300 caves multi - shaped known as the "Kingdom of the cave", where there is a mystery of wonders and attraction, a paradise for scientists in caves, explorers and tourists. It is known as the "Kingdom of the cave" with over 300 multi-shaped caves.
The characteristic of this national park are its karsts that are millions of years old, and said to be most valuable in Southeast Asia. It has majestic landscapes with a spectacular cave system, abundant biological diversity and many historical and cultural relics, and underground rivers.
It is hard and even nearly impossible to describe in words the majestic beauty of those caves and halls. During the past years, Phong Nha – Ke Bang as become a favorite tourism place of the tourists. The number of tourists has increased more and more, especially from the time when Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park was recognized as a World Natural Heritage.
Another attraction in Quang Binh that has already been discovered is Son Doong cave- the biggest cave known by mankind. The name "Son Doong" cave means "mountain river cave"
It is found by a local man named Ho Khanh in 1991 and explored by the British Cave Research Association. The entire cave is approximately 9 kilometers long with the largest chamber of 200 meters wide and 150 meters high. Son Doong has its own river, jungle and climate. Jungles emerge from inside the cave itself, a scene so surreal that you have to see it and believe it. Son Doong cave is not only exceptional in size, but also ranked as the most beautiful cave all over the globe by BBC News. +It is really a masterpiece that nature offers for this region.
The best time of the year to visit Son Doong is from February to August. From February to April, the weather is cool and mild, suitable for trekking in the cave. However, remember to bring along some trekking jackets because it can be quite cold at night. From May to August, the weather is often hot and humid so the expedition is more arduous and challenging. From September to January, the cave is closed as the flood making it impossible to access to the caves.
