Pu Luong Nature Reserve – The Beauty Combination of Northern Vietnam

By: Brian Vu - 31 October 2016

Newly found out recently, Pu Luong Nature Reserve has been progressively overtaken many other famous destinations in Vietnam like Sapa, Mai Chau, Ha Giang, Cao Bang, etc.. to become the King of Northern Vietnam with the beauty combination of all those places. And certainly, there is a good reason for that.

Pu Luong Nature Reserve

No one can explain why a place like Pu Luong has not been explored earlier. Located along 2 parallel mountain ranges running from north-west to south-east, the reserve is divided by a central valley where there are some settlements of inhabitants and not much influence of tourism industry could be seen.

1. Don Village

Whether you will spend 1, 2 or 3 days in Pu Luong Vietnam, promise me that you will stay at least 1 night in Don village, the most beautiful village in this area and is very convenient to reach if you travel from Hanoi. Additionally, Don village is also nice place for trekking activities or experience the feeling of floating along Cham river by bamboo raft.

And if you want to see the stunning waterwheels as well as learn how the locals can move water to the fields by this aqueduct, Don village will never make you feel disappointed. Now in the village, there are still about 20 waterwheels of all sizes remained to make local life and work easier.

Kho Muong Village is absolutely recommended by anyone thanks to its primitive beauty, the friendly local people and the picturesque Kho Muong Cave, which is described by a local man “more beautiful than caves in Halong Bay”.

To reach the cave, you need to pass a road which is surrounded by a large field on this side and a stream on the other side.

4. Hieu Village

Together with Kho Muong Village, Hieu village, the most famous here, is also a place to visit in Pu Luong Nature Reserve. Referring to Hieu village, no one should miss the impressive Hieu waterfall, where you can take a bath, stop on the way of trekking for picnic lunch or just simply relax by the fall, hear and see the clear water falling from above. So charming!

The major minority here is Thai people who are known to have the unique culture “When guests come to their home, only men of the family receive guests, drink and talk with them”. The exceptional culture of Thai people is still hiding many things, which are only unveiled via the speech of the hosts that you can understand deeply. So, don’t forget to stay here and listen to many interesting stories.

3. Floating on river by bamboo rafts

Actually, there are 2 activities on stream you can take: kayaking and rafting. However, the reason why you should take a rafting trip instead is due to the fact that, the peaceful beauty should be put in a slow rhythm.

SUGGESTION OF PLACES TO STAY IN PU LUONG NATURE RESERVE

Homestay of Mr.Thuc (in Don Village)

For those who want to get more experience and get closer to the authentic local life, the homestay of Mr.Thuc will be the perfect choice. Mr.Thuc is still quite young but he is the main business man of the family. He is also very friendly and always focuses on making the best care to his guests. The homestay he offers is also where the family live every day, which explains why his house has remained the authenticity for centuries.

In our trip with stay at his house, he confided in us that (translated from Vietnamese): “Before, I thought, to use my house to serve tourists, I needed to make it become a modern place but I was wrong. Via advices of experienced people, I know that my house still hide its own value which is what guests want to see. It’s reason why I used money to rebuild the sanitation and buy new mattress, pillows, blankets and mosquito nets only”.

Mr.Thuc is a gentle man and always be nice with guests. However, he is not really good at English to receive English-speaking non-guided travel groups. So if you feel interested, feel free to consider some tour programs of Pu Luong Trekking we offer and set up with stay at his house.
